The third Sanjiangyuan Eco-Cultural Tourism Festival and the three-day Yushu Horse Racing Festival concluded on Saturday at Zhaxike Racecourse in northwest China’s Qinghai Province.
Nearly 10,000 people flocked to the racecourse in Yushu City to celebrate the opening of the event. The event took place in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on July 25.
With a history of over 1,300 years, the festival is a cornerstone of Tibetan culture. Traditionally celebrated on important occasions such as mountain worship, welcoming guests or weddings, horse racing festivals are a much-loved tradition.
Vibrant celebrations on the Jiegu grasslands
During such festivals, the Tibetans of Yushu dress in colourful traditional costumes and set up their tents on the grasslands of Jiegu, creating an impressive spectacle as they gather for the celebrations.
A variety of equestrian performances are on display at the event. Highlights include horse archery, horse shooting, the elegant art of picking up khata scarves while riding, and displays of horse tumbling and horse hanging.
In addition to these exciting displays, visitors can enjoy watching long-distance horse and foot races, as well as yak races.
These celebratory dates are further enriched by lively songs, traditional dances and impressive displays of folkloric costumes.
