Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), one of China’s leading battery manufacturers, unveiled a new battery designed for hybrid vehicles in Beijing on Thursday.
The battery, known as Freevoy, is the world’s first hybrid battery with a range of more than 400 kilometers and super-fast charging capabilities, with just a 10-minute charge can add a driving distance of more than 280 kilometers, from according to Gao Huan, chief technology officer of CATL’s China electric car business.
With sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries, Freevoy also meets the low-temperature limitations of new energy vehicles (NEVs), allowing them to operate in extremely cold environments – temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius for discharge and minus 30 negative degrees Celsius for recharging.
More Chinese consumers are preferring hybrids as they offer a longer range than pure electric cars and can cost less than gasoline-powered cars.
Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that hybrid sales in the first nine months of this year reached 3.32 million units, an increase of 84% over last year. “The penetration rate of hybrid vehicles in the NEV market has reached 43%, which is a force that cannot be ignored in the electrification process,” said Luo Jian, marketing director of CATL.
