China’s new energy storage sector recorded accelerated growth in 2024, with installed capacity reaching 73.76 million kilowatts, an increase of more than 130% from 2023, according to the National Energy Administration (ANE). Average storage duration also rose to 2.3 hours, reflecting significant operational improvements.

New energy storage, which uses different technologies than conventional water pumping storage, plays a strategic role in the consumption of renewable energy, ensuring peak supply and stability of the electrical system. The sector is central to China’s new electricity system, contributing to the energy transition and the development of the green economy.

Regional and industrial highlights

The main regions with the highest installed capacity include Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shandong, Jiangsu and Ningxia, with northern China leading the sector, accounting for 30.1% of national capacity. Large-scale projects also gained prominence: plants with a capacity equal to or greater than 100 thousand kilowatts accounted for 62.3% of the total, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to 2023.

Furthermore, the new energy storage industry has generated around 200 billion yuan (approximately R$138 billion) since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), fostering industrial clusters, technological advances and the creation of new innovative companies .

Goals and perspectives for the future

With the goal of carbon neutrality in mind, China is integrating renewable energy as a key driver of the green economy. ANE plans to intensify efforts to promote technological innovation and refine market mechanisms in the 15th Five-Year Plan. The agency also seeks to strengthen international cooperation to boost China’s global role in the energy storage sector.
