China will strengthen the role of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in advancing its Healthy China Initiative, a senior official with the National Health Commission said.

In an interview with Xinhua, Yu Yanhong, also head of the National TCM Administration, said the institution is committed to protecting people’s health in all aspects and throughout their lives, leveraging TCM capabilities and supporting the combination of TCM and Western medicine.

China now has 41,000 TCM clinics, and more than 99 percent of community and village-level medical institutions are capable of providing TCM services. By 2023, China’s 93,000 specialized TCM medical institutions will have recorded 1.5 billion medical visits, according to Yu.
