Chinese state-owned company Cnooc announced on Monday (27) the beginning of production in the Mero4 project, at the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, in Brazil. The subsidiary CNOOC Petroleum Brazil holds 9.65% of participation in the field, operated in partnership with other global oil companies.

Located about 180 km from the coast of Rio de Janeiro and in depths between 1,800 and 2,100 meters, the mere field adopts the traditional model of floating unit of production, storage and unloading (FPSO), with wells equipped with intelligent completion technology to maximize production.

The Mero4 project is one of the largest in the world and should reach the ability to process 180,000 barrels of oil per day, 12 million cubic meters of natural gas and 250,000 cubic meters of water. The unit was completed in China in December 2024 and arrived in the Brazilian maritime area in March this year.

In addition to the focus on productivity, the project also incorporates sustainable practices, simultaneously promoting production and reduction of emissions. The field is expected to reach 770,000 barrels a day with the full operation of Mero4, further strengthening energy ties between China and Brazil.
