China said on Monday that it is fully capable of ensuring its food and energetic security, even though it reduces or suspends imports of US commodities. The statement was made by Zhao Chenxin, deputy chief of the National Development and Reform Commission (CNDR), the country’s leading economic planning body, in response to a press question about the impact of new American tariffs.

According to Zhao, China grain reserves are abundant and imports from the US represent only a small portion of domestic consumption, being mostly intended for animal feed production. “Even if we stop buying grains and oilseeds from the United States, the impact will be minimal,” he said.

The same applies to energy. According to the leader, in 2024 Chinese imports of oil, natural gas and coal from the US were small in the face of total demand, and the country has a broad base of international suppliers to meet their needs.

Zhao harshly criticized the so-called “reciprocal tariffs” announced by Washington, classifying them as acts of unilateral intimidation. According to him, the measures violate global economic rules and are “doomed to failure.”

He also pointed out that China will continue to adopt “justified and moderate” contracted to defend their interests and the international economic order. “We will be alongside the vast majority of countries in the world – on the right side of history and human progress,” said Zhao.
