China has scheduled more than 150 special tourist trains to run to northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in 2024, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The first train arrived in the city of Shihezi on Friday, four days after departing from Nanchang, south China’s Jiangxi Province.

The trains are part of a program launched by the ministry and the China State Railway Group to help develop Xinjiang and the Xizang Autonomous Region through rail tourism.

The introduction of tourist trains to Xinjiang was also a move to leverage the role tourism plays as an industry closely related to people’s well-being and happiness, according to a railway company official.
