At the first China-Latin America Youth Forum for Poverty Reduction, held on December 25, William Guey, a doctoral candidate at Tsinghua University and member of an award-winning team, presented the Sustainable Solar Lighting and Emergency Energy Project. This initiative won the gold medal in the “2024 China-Latin America Student Competition for Poverty Reduction”, organized by institutions such as Tsinghua University, PUC-Chile and UFRJ, and which attracted around 200 students from 14 countries.
Guey highlighted the challenges faced by poor Brazilian communities in relation to the lack of electricity. His project uses a low-cost solar device, with 3D printed prototypes, capable of lighting, recharging cell phones and issuing emergency alarms. The team has already started partnerships to produce and install the first units in needy communities.
Another project, led by an international team with participants from Brazil and Indonesia, promotes vocational education as a tool to combat poverty. Inspired by the Chinese professional training model, such as the “Lu Ban” project, the group plans to adapt the experience to the Brazilian context, collaborating with governments and community organizations.
The director of the Center for Latin America at Tsinghua University, Chen Taotao, highlighted the importance of cooperation between China and Latin America in eradicating poverty and announced the annual holding of the China-Latin America Youth Contest to Alleviate Poverty, which in 2025 will include the participation of Peru and Uruguay.
