President Lula said that China is essential for Brazil’s economic growth on Monday during a meeting with the international press in Brasília. “It is important to highlight that this year we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic and commercial relations with China. We intend to discuss a new strategic partnership with the Chinese. A strategic partnership that includes not only the export of commodities, but also a debate on science and technology, chip production and software,” he said.

“China’s growth is undeniable, no one can fail to recognize it. We may not agree, but no one can fail to recognize what China has done over the last 30 and 40 years,” added Lula. The president stated that Brazil needs to take advantage of all the results of its growth to make internal investments that improve people’s lives, including combating hunger.

Lula recalled that last year, the first year of his third term, it was possible to lift 24 million people out of hunger in Brazil. “The great contribution is for each country to end hunger in its own country, and then, with what is left, the world will come together in solidarity. That is what I hope we can do with China, so that we can have another 50 or 100 years of highly productive relations,” he emphasized.

“I remember when China had a GDP lower than Brazil’s, when China produced less steel than Brazil. Today, China produces one billion tons and Brazil continues to produce 35 million, with the potential to reach 51 million tons. There is no other alternative for a country the size of Brazil than plurality in its relations with the entire world,” Lula emphasized.
