China aims to eliminate, by 2025, severe episodes of air pollution, reinforcing their control and mitigation strategies, announced Li Tianwei of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Monday. For this, the country will expand air quality monitoring measures and improve pollutant management such as PM2.5 and ozone.

Efforts already show results: by 2024, the average concentration of PM2.5 in Chinese cities fell 2.7%, and the proportion of days with good air reached 87.2%. However, mobile sources still represent a major challenge, accounting for about 60% of nitrogen oxide emissions and 24% of volatile organic compounds.

To face this problem, China plans to adopt more rigorous emission patterns and expand the use of electric vehicles at airports, ports and logistics centers. In addition, it intends to accelerate the migration of cargo transportation from roads to railways and waterways, contributing to sustainable improvement in air quality.
