China has submitted two reports to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, detailing climate action and recent progress, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said. The documents include the first biennial climate change transparency report and the fourth biennial update report, submitted as scheduled in late 2024.

The reports cover the national greenhouse gas inventory, advances in the nationally determined contribution, emission reduction policies and their effects, as well as adaptation, financing and climate technology. Among the results, we highlight the reduction of more than 50% in carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2021, compared to 2005, and the increase in forestry stock by 6.5 billion cubic meters. In 2023, non-fossil fuels represented 18% of energy consumption, while in October 2024, the installed capacity of wind and solar electricity reached 1.3 billion kilowatts.

The goals of expanding forest stock and clean energy generation capacity were achieved ahead of schedule, demonstrating the progress of the country’s climate policies. The reports also assessed the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the economy, highlighting Chinese policies and experiences in addressing these challenges.

With these advances, China reinforces its role in combating global climate change, aligning itself with sustainable development goals.
