China has authorized 21 Brazilian companies to export sesame to its market, strengthening commercial ties between the two countries and consolidating Brazil as a supplier to the largest global importer of the product. The decision was made official after the visit of the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to Brazil at the end of 2024.

China consumes 38.4% of the world sesame and regulated Brazilian imports through the 183/2024 announcement of the general administration of customs. Currently, Brazil occupies the seventh position among global exporters, with 5.31% share, and seeks to expand its market.

The qualified companies must be registered with the Chinese authorities and appointed by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture. Exported sesame needs to be free of quarantine pests and follow strict inspection patterns. Transportation should occur in new packaging, duly identified and in accordance with phytosanitary requirements.

If irregularities are detected on arrival in China, loads may be refused, returned or destroyed, reinforcing the need for compliance with established sanitary protocols.
