China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced on Monday the discovery of a new large oil field in the east of the Southern Sea of China, with reservations exceeding 100 million tons.
Located about 170 kilometers from Shenzhen, in Guangdong province, the Huizhou 19-6 field is the first large-scale classic oil field of the country discovered in deep to ultra-proof. According to the company, test drilling revealed a daily production of 413 barrels of gross oil and 68 thousand cubic meters of natural gas.
Deep layer exploration imposes technical challenges such as high temperatures, high pressure and low permeability of classical reservoirs. Nevertheless, 60% of newly discovered reserves in the world come from these layers, said Peng Guangrong, geologist at Shenzhen branch of CNOOC.
According to the company’s CEO, Zhou Xinhuai, this is the second consecutive discovery with reserves over 100 million tons in the region, consolidating the potential for growth of offshore production in China.
