The scale and intensity of respiratory infectious diseases in China are lower compared with last year, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Friday. He highlighted that the country remains committed to ensuring comfort, safety and convenience for national and foreign travelers.

In recent days, concerns have emerged about the rise in cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, fueling unfounded rumors about “unknown viruses”. At a press conference, Guo denied these allegations, explaining that HMPV is a common virus, known for more than 60 years, that causes mild, self-limiting respiratory infections. “Calling this common virus ‘unknown’ is inconsistent with basic science and essentially fear-mongering,” he said.

The Chinese government highlighted that it carries out active and transparent monitoring of respiratory diseases. The country’s technical agencies maintain strict surveillance and release results regularly, in addition to providing scientific guidance to the public to protect against infections. Guo also stressed the continued cooperation between China and the WHO with timely sharing of information on respiratory diseases.

With these measures, authorities reinforce that traveling to China is safe and that the public health situation is under control.
