Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulations on Tuesday with António Costa, president of the European Council, and Ursula Von Der Leyen, chairman of the European Commission, for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU).
In the message, XI highlighted the strategic character of the partnership, classifying China and EU as “two great forces that promote multipolarization, two major markets that support globalization and two great civilizations that defend diversity.” According to him, the bilateral relationship has become one of the most influential of the international scenario, with advances in political dialogue, cultural exchanges, multilateral coordination and economic cooperation.
Xi stressed that, in the face of rapid global transformations and a challenging geopolitical scenario, a healthy and stable relationship between China and EU not only benefits both sides, but also contributes to peace and world development.
The Chinese leader said he was willing to work with Costa and Von Der Leyen to deepen strategic communication, increase mutual confidence, expand reciprocal opening and deal with differences in a constructive way. The goal, according to XI, is to build an even more promising future for the partnership.
He also defended joint commitment to multilateralism and global equity, rejecting unilateralism and intimidation. Xi concluded asking for union between China and EU to face global challenges and promote a fairer world order and inclusive globalization.
