The General Administration of Customs of China issued the Announcement on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Import of Brazilian Fresh Grapes on Monday, which allows the import of Brazilian table grapes that meet the relevant requirements with immediate effect.
According to the announcement, imports of grapes from producing regions in Pernambuco and Bahia are permitted. Vineyards, packaging factories and cold treatment facilities for export to China must be audited by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and approved for registration by the General Administration of Customs of China.
On November 20, China and Brazil signed several cooperation documents, including the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol, in which China agreed to open its market to fresh Brazilian grapes. Currently, countries authorized to export table grapes to China include Peru, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Brazilian grapes are expected to enter the Chinese market for the first time this year.
Brazilian grape exports decreased significantly at the beginning of 2024, with just 2,400 tons exported in the first three months, a 58% reduction compared to the same period in 2021. As the world’s fourth largest producer of table grapes, the Brazil has been seeking to expand its grape trade with Asian partners for years. China is a major consumer of premium grapes and imported more than US$480 million of this product last year, according to statistics.
