Brazil will host the BRICS leaders summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced on Saturday.
Brazil has taken over the BRICS rotary presidency on January 1 and is leading the working groups to prepare the agenda and the themes of the summit, which will bring together heads of state and government.
The announcement came after Vieira met with the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, on Saturday. The decision follows the city’s success in hosting the G20 leaders summit in November last year.
“We will welcome heads of state in the 20 countries who are full members and partners of the BRICS, where we will make important decisions about development, cooperation and improvement of living conditions in these nations. Once again, Rio de Janeiro will be the scene of a great international meeting, ”said Vieira.
Paes, who created a commission to supervise the organization of the event, said the BRICS summit will strengthen international relations and promote cultural, commercial and tourist exchanges.
