At the head of the BRICS presidency this year, Brazil defended on Wednesday (5) the institutional strengthening of the bloc, which is experiencing an unprecedented expansion phase. In a discourse during the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, held at the National Congress, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stated that the diversity of member countries is a asset and that the moment calls for more cohesion and effectiveness in the group’s functioning.

“The expansion of the group requires more cohesion and effectiveness. The challenges we face are complex and interconnected. No country can face them alone,” Alckmin said, highlighting the strategic role of parliaments in the articulation of multilateral agendas.

The BRICS leaders summit is scheduled for July 6 and 7, in Rio de Janeiro, and the Brazilian government promises that the meeting will represent a “renewed inflection and ambition point” for the block. The ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha, secretary general of Itamaraty, said that 160 official meetings under the Brazilian presidency have already been held, demonstrating the commitment to a purposeful and representative performance.

With the recent adhesion of countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, UAE and Indonesia, BRICS seeks to reform international institutions, defend greater representativeness of the global southern southern coins in trade among its members. In addition to the new permanent members, this year created a new category of partner countries, including Bolivia, Kazakhstan and Nigeria, among others.
