Energy cooperation between BRICS countries is essential to boost energy transition and ensure global climate security, Mariana Species, a special advisor to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and coordinator of the group’s energy cooperation activities during the Brazilian presidency.
In an interview with Brics Brasil Communications, Mariana pointed out that the block has been consolidating its energy agenda since the creation of the energy group in 2018, focusing on sustainable and technologically neutral solutions. The energy transition, according to her, will be a central theme at COP30, which will take place in Belém (PA) in 2025.
Mariana stressed the protagonism of countries such as Brazil, India and Indonesia in the production of biofuels, as well as China’s leadership in solar and wind technologies. It also emphasized the importance of adapting the transition to local realities, with strategies that respect the resources and capabilities of each country.
Among the challenges pointed out are the impacts of climate change on energy infrastructure. In Brazil, extreme phenomena such as floods and intense winds have affected energy supply. Given this, the group plans to present three deliveries in the next BRICS summit: the update of the work plan for the next five years, a report on sustainable fuels and another about access to energy in member countries.
“Brazil is committed to strengthening BRICS energy cooperation and consolidating the group as a key actor in the global energy transition,” said Mariana.
