
BMW announced, on Monday, a partnership with Huawei to develop an automotive digital ecosystem adapted to the Chinese market. Collaboration marks the integration of the German automaker with the HarmonyOS NEXTHuawei operating system developed regardless of Android architecture.
Among the planned innovations, BMW’s digital key functionality will allow Huawei devices users to unlock, block and turn on their vehicles via smartphone later this year. Already in 2026, the next generation electric models of BMW produced in China, known as New classwill be equipped with a Huawei smart interconnection solution.
“China has emerged as a global innovation engine,” said Sean Green, BMW CEO in China. According to him, almost a quarter of the company’s mobile application users use Huawei devices, making integration with Harmony Essential to improve the digital experience of customers.
BMW has expanded its presence in China, where it operates R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Nanjing, forming its largest research network outside Germany. By 2024, the company announced new investments to modernize its production base in Shenyang, where it has applied 116 billion yuans ($ 16.18 billion) since 2010, making the city the largest BMW productive hub in the world.
