Beijing has reached a historic mark in its energy transition by reducing coal participation in its total energy consumption to less than 1%, the Municipal Development and Reform Commission of the Chinese capital said on Friday.

Between 2012 and 2024, annual coal consumption plummeted from 21.8 million to less than 600,000 tons, the result of strict coal replacement policies and accelerated adoption of renewable sources, according to Yang Xiuling, head of the commission.

Last year, clean origin electricity represented 29% of the city’s energy consumption, totaling 41 billion kWh from a total of 139 billion kWh. Natural gas also played an important role, responding for a third of consumption, with 19.5 billion cubic meters supplied.

These advances contributed directly to the improvement of air quality. The concentration of fine particles PM2.5 fell 66% since 2013, from 89.5 to 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter by 2024.
