Babymonster releases first EP and showcases YG’s signature hiphop style

The release comes seven months after the septet’s official debut with their first extended play (EP) album, “Babymons7er.”

“This album exudes our unique charm, just as the title suggests,” said one of the members, Rami, during a media event at the agency’s headquarters in western Seoul.

The young woman added that they have put extra effort into the work, since it is their first full-length album and that, as it is made up of several genres, the idea is that it is pleasant to listen to each song. Likewise, he said that the band has concentrated its efforts to demonstrate, through these new songs, how much it has grown during the last seven months.

Ruka, another member of the group, shared that Babymonster aimed to present a work that is recognized by people as a “new classic” within the YG brand. The girls believe that this album not only reflects their talent and unique voices, but also their distinctive teenage vibe.

When asked about the essence of his management company’s signature hip-hop style, Rora explained that, as seen in the music video for the song “Drip,” it’s about letting your individuality shine freely, without strict rules. The artist added that her previous song, “Sheesh,” had a heavier hiphop feel, but this time it’s more about having fun together.

The album consists of nine songs, including the two lead singles: “Drip” and “Click Clak.” The first song is an upbeat dance track, with electronic dance music (EDM) beats making it perfect for intense stage performances. This particular song has generated a lot of expectations among fans, since the K-pop icon G-Dragonleader of BIGBANG, from the same agency, contributed to the song’s composition.

Asa reflected on working with this star and commented that when they first heard his demo, they tried their best to capture his style and that distinctive YG style.

Ahyeon proudly presented another title track, “Click Clak,” as an intense and traditional hiphop number, in which all seven members rap in English.

Another of the featured songs could be “Love, Maybe”, in which soft guitar sounds and expressive voices are heard; “Really Like You”, with a 90s hiphop feel; and “Love In My Heart”, with a more upbeat melody. The pre-release single “Forever” completes the album.

Since their debut, Babymonster has quickly gained public attention thanks to their impressive live performances. In particular, the girls draw attention for their use of handheld microphones on stage, which is rare for K-pop idol groups.

Rami shared that the group plans to maintain this aspect, focusing on live performances and on the stages of national television music shows.

The singer explained that they perform with handheld microphones to show the appeal of singing live and that they practice regularly for this. He also added that thanks to their training to develop basic skills from their trainee years, they are now able to deliver these live performances well.

The group also recently participated in the 15th anniversary concert of 2NE1, one of the veteran bands of the same agency, where they gave a powerful performance that received much praise.

Rami said it was an incredible opportunity that taught them a lot and described it as “an honor and a growing experience.”

The young woman also said that, while watching 2NE1 and BLACKPINKwas impressed by their aura and the way they used the stage. He confessed that he felt their professionalism was inspiring and that the Babymonster members constantly remind themselves that they must work hard to become juniors worthy of their legacy.
