The Chinese capital, Beijing, announced that, from September this year, the free administration of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines for seventh grade girls will begin. The initiative adds to other efforts already implemented by various provincial regions and Chinese cities since 2021, reinforcing the country’s commitment to preventive health and reducing the risk of cervical cancer among women.

The plan, released by the Beijing Disease Prevention and Control Center in conjunction with other relevant authorities, will use the internally produced bivalent vaccine. This choice aims not only to effectively reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer, but also ensuring that measurements are aligned with global efforts. According to the official document, the program foresees the evaluation of girls currently in sixth grade by the end of March, to verify their willingness to receive the vaccine. The first dose should be administered to the target group by October 31 this year.

The campaign is inserted in a global context in which the World Health Organization (WHO) seeks 90% of girls to be fully vaccinated against HPV by age 15, contributing to the reduction of cervical cancer rates. In 2022, cervical cancer was the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, which reinforces the importance of preventive initiatives.

According to the National Health Commission, the measure is part of China’s continuous efforts to expand access to vaccination and promote public health. Currently, about 40% of 13 to 14 -year -old girls in China already have free access to the HPV vaccine, demonstrating the national commitment to the health protection of future generations.
