China President Xi Jinping said on Monday that Beijing supports the efforts of Russia and other parts involved to reduce tensions in Ukraine. The statement was made during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
XI pointed out that since the aggravation of the conflict, China has promoted guidelines for a political solution, including the “four duties”, and encouraged international dialogues. In September 2023, alongside Brazil and other global southern nations, the country launched the group of friends for peace to create an environment conducive to negotiations.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, also reaffirmed that Beijing maintains an objective position and will continue to work with the international community to facilitate a ceasefire and make a diplomatic solution possible. The statement came in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed expectations regarding Chinese support for the restoration of peace and the reconstruction of Ukraine.
