An exhibition of the digital restoration of Taiyuan’s Tianlongshan Grottoes opened on Saturday at the China Cultural Center in Cairo, attracting more than 70 experts and scholars in the field of archeology and museums from China and Egypt on the first day.

As one of the most famous caves in China, the spaces are notable for the Buddha statues located inside. Construction began around the Eastern Wei Dynasty (534-550 AD) and continued until the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). The site features 25 caves and more than 500 Buddha statues, reflecting the sophisticated carving skills and art of the time.

“The arrival of these exquisite exhibits in Egypt represents a valuable opportunity for Egyptians to gain an in-depth understanding of Chinese culture and also gain insight into the geography, history and culture of the Tianlongshan Grottoes,” said Maissara A. Hussein, vice-president. director of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. “China’s advanced technology of restoring and protecting historic sites deserves to be promoted to the world.”

Wei Tao, secretary of the CPC Taiyuan Municipal Committee, said the international exhibition tour used many modern technologies such as holographic imaging and augmented reality to digitally reimagine statues and offer a comprehensive display of the splendid art of Tianlongshan Grottoes.
