The number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in circulation in China will reach 31.4 million by the end of 2024, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Friday. This number represents a 260-fold increase compared to the last decade, driven by technological advances, improvements in charging infrastructure and greater ecological awareness among the population.

NEVs now make up 9% of the country’s total vehicle fleet. In 2024, 11.25 million NEVs were registered, a 51% growth compared to 2023. Since 2014, when only 120 thousand NEVs were in use, the expansion has been exponential, with the number exceeding 30 million by the end of 2024 . Chinese vehicles represent more than half of the global NEV fleet, consolidating the country as a world leader in the sector.

Domestic demand for NEVs continues to grow, driving the development of the sector. During this year’s Spring Festival, NEVs are expected to be the main mode of transportation. To support drivers, 33,000 charging stations were installed on motorways, covering 97% of service areas and facilitating travel for millions of people.
