China is encouraging foreign tourists to take part in Chinese New Year celebrations and the traditional Spring Festival, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said during a briefing on Tuesday. According to Guo, the “China Travel” trend continues to rise, with measures that facilitate tourism, such as the expansion of the visa exemption program.
Since the beginning of the year, the number of foreign tourists in China has grown significantly. Data indicates that inbound and outbound trips by foreigners totaled 65 million in 2024, an increase of 83% compared to the previous year. Of these, more than 20 million were carried out without a visa, an increase of 112%. During the New Year holidays, the flow of foreigners grew by 34%. In addition, reservations for this year’s Spring Festival are expected to grow 203% compared to 2024, according to travel agencies.
The 2025 Spring Festival will be the first since the festival was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. “We invite foreign tourists to experience the joy of Chinese New Year, feel Chinese hospitality and usher in an auspicious Year of the Snake,” Guo said. Celebrations include cultural traditions, typical cuisine and festivities that reflect the essence of the Lunar New Year.
