The President of China, Xi Jinping, highlighted last Friday the relevance of the “one country, two systems” policy during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the homeland. The declaration took place at an official ceremony at the city’s main stadium, where Sam Hou Fai, a former senior judge, was sworn in as chief executive for the sixth term of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR).

During the event, Xi Jinping highlighted that Macau’s transformative achievements since its reintegration demonstrate the vitality and institutional strength of the “one country, two systems” model. The policy, also applied in Hong Kong, allows both regions to maintain their own capitalist systems and lifestyles, coexisting within the Chinese socialist system.

On his visit to the region, Xi inspected strategic projects such as the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, praising their contribution to economic diversification. The president also visited the Macau University of Science and Technology, reaffirming the central government’s commitment to the sustainable development of the region.

At the end of his speech, Xi Jinping highlighted that the “one country, two systems” policy not only guarantees the long-term prosperity and stability of special administrative regions, but also contributes to China’s national revitalization. He reinforced that values such as inclusion and cooperation incorporated in this approach must be preserved and promoted globally.
