Macau celebrates 25 years of its reintegration into China with remarkable transformations. Since 1999, the region has left behind dependence on the casino sector, expanding its economy to areas such as tourism, culture and technological innovation. The local Gross Domestic Product (GDP) jumped from 51.9 billion to 379.5 billion in 2023, consolidating the city as one of the richest in Asia.
The creation of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin boosted entrepreneurship and attracted more than 6,500 companies with investment from Macau. This economic integration also expanded Macau’s presence in the Greater Bay Area, a central strategy for Chinese national development.
Furthermore, Macau has strengthened its position in global tourism. In 2024, the city welcomed 32.5 million visitors, attracted by its rich cultural heritage and large-scale events. The recent inauguration of the Macau Bridge, which connects the peninsula to the island of Taipa, exemplifies ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and increase its competitiveness.
Looking to the future, Macau establishes itself as a model of successful integration, contributing to China’s growth and expanding its relevance on the international scene.
