China has announced ambitious plans to achieve a 5G user penetration rate of more than 85% by the end of 2027, in an effort to expand the technology’s large-scale applications and boost its digital economy.
According to an action plan released by several government departments, the country will have 38 5G base stations for every 10,000 inhabitants by 2027. 5G will represent 75% of mobile internet traffic, and the number of Internet of Things devices connected by this technology will exceed 100 million.
Furthermore, 45% of large and medium-sized industrial companies are expected to adopt 5G technologies in the same period. The objective is to integrate digital innovation into productive sectors, accelerate the modernization of communications infrastructure and strengthen high-quality economic and social growth.
Currently, China already leads the global 5G market. By September 2024, the country had around 4.09 million 5G base stations and 981 million subscribers to this technology, representing a penetration rate of approximately 70% in a population of 1.4 billion people, according to with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
With the plan, the government intends not only to popularize 5G, but also to promote intelligent industrialization, develop new generation information technologies and consolidate its position as a world leader in technological innovation.
