Chinese commercial satellite constellation Spacesail will provide satellite communications services and broadband internet access to remote and unserved areas of Brazil. The initiative will be carried out in partnership with Telebras, according to the cooperation memorandum signed last Wednesday with Shanghai Spacesail Technologies, developer of the project.
Commercial services in Brazil are expected to officially begin in 2026, marking the beginning of the Chinese company’s international operations. Spacesail is a low-orbit megaconstellation with a multi-layer, multi-orbit design designed to provide broadband communications. It currently has 36 satellites in operation, already tested and capable of providing services.
The constellation is expected to begin global operation in 2025, providing support in areas such as transportation, renewable energy, smart cities, precision agriculture, disaster response and low-altitude economics. Furthermore, Shanghai Spacesail Technologies is negotiating with more than 30 countries to expand its commercial applications around the world.
With 1,059 satellites in orbit — of which 492 are commercial — China is experiencing a growing scenario in the space sector. By June 2024, the country had 546 commercial companies active in this segment.
