A Chinese envoy on Monday called on the United States to take tangible steps to pressure Israel to halt its military operations in the Gaza Strip without delay.
“We urge the United States to demonstrate a responsible attitude, use the significant influence it has on the party and take tangible measures to pressure Israel to cease its military operations without delay, as required by Council resolutions, to give the long-suffering Palestinian people a chance to live,” Genga Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council at a meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
Geng noted that last year, despite strong joint international calls for a ceasefire and an end to the killings, Israel did not stop its military operations in Gaza, which led to the deaths of more than 41,000 Palestinian civilians. “This is alarming. This is unbelievable,” the ambassador emphasized.
