The United States announced more than $1 billion in additional aid to Ukraine, including the supply of depleted uranium munitions, and its top diplomat assured President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Washington’s continued support during a visit to Kiev.

As reported by Kyodo News, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this aid after meeting with Zelenskyy and other officials on the same day, during his fourth visit to the conflict-torn country since the Russian invasion began in February last year.

“We in the United States are determined to continue walking alongside you,” Blinken told Zelenskyy during an open portion of their meeting, according to the US State Department.

Blinken also met with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and visited a cemetery for those killed in the conflict against Russia.

Ammunition made from depleted uranium, which is extremely dense, offers greater penetration power than other anti-tank weapons, although there are concerns that particles of the material could affect human health and the environment.

The department also said Blinken met earlier that day with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen en route to Ukraine, and discussed issues such as Copenhagen’s decision to provide Ukraine with its U.S.-produced F-16 fighter jets.
