A recent report from the country’s top intellectual property regulator shows that China is set to take the top spot in the number of green and low-carbon patent applications in 2023, registering a 20 percent year-on-year increase and accounting for more than half of the global total.

This increase was 7.1 percentage points higher than the global average, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration highlighted in the Report on Statistical Analysis of Green and Low-Carbon Patents.

According to the document, green and low-carbon patents are those focused on technologies that can promote green development, covering five main domains: reducing carbon emissions from fossil energy; energy saving, recycling and utilization; clean energy; energy storage and capture, utilization and storage of greenhouse gases.

China performed well in the energy storage field, with 37,000 patent applications filed in 2023 alone, accounting for 48% of the global volume. In clean energy, China’s number of invention patent applications for solar energy and hydrogen energy was the highest in the world, reaching 8,000 and 5,000 respectively.
