“Do you know which currency is immune to widespread cyber outages? Bitcoin. Vires in Numeris.”
Vires in Numeris is a Latin term meaning “the power of numbers.” This phrase has become synonymous with Bitcoin.
Friday’s outage caused connectivity issues across industries including financial services, medical offices and television broadcasters. Air travel was particularly hard hit, with flights grounded, delays and airport warnings issued for passengers.
The outage was caused by cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which experienced a significant outage due to a recent technology update. Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz said the incident was not a security breach or a cyberattack, adding that the issue had been identified, isolated, and resolved.
Troy Hunt, the cybersecurity researcher behind the breach tracking service HaveIbeenpwned, described the ongoing global tech outage as “the largest IT outage in history.”
“If you look at the Bitcoin hash rate chart, Bitcoin has not been affected at all because most, if not all, Bitcoin miners are using Linux-based frameworks. It’s funny because banks around the world are shutting down because of this server issue, but Bitcoin continues to generate hashes.”
