From Bordeaux wines and Iberian ham to Comté cheese and Sitia olive oil, the agricultural products characteristic of the European Union (EU) have gained a greater presence in the kitchens of Chinese families, pleasing the Chinese palate with their exotic flavors.
Each of these products is labeled with the Geographical Indication (GI) designation, a mark of authenticity and quality endorsed by the EU and China, making them highly sought after products in the Chinese market.
China and the EU signed an agreement on geographical indications in 2021, aiming to improve bilateral trade in agri-food products. This year marks the third anniversary of the entry into force of the historic agreement.
The first list of GIs, which came into force in 2021, protects 100 Chinese agricultural GIs in the EU and 96 EU agricultural GIs in China. A second list with more products from both sides will be protected from March 1, 2025.
“In a broader sense, GIs contribute to improving relations between the EU and China, bringing us closer together through our mutual love of food,” said EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski in an interview with Xinhua.
