A strong earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, recently shook southern Japan, according to the United States Geological Surveillance Center.
The tremor was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, at a depth of 49 kilometers, but very close to the coast — about 11 kilometers from the coastal city of Miyazaki. The affected area is in the south of the country, about a thousand kilometers from the capital, Tokyo.
The earthquake was recorded in a confluence zone of two tectonic plates: the Eurasian plate and the Philippine plate. In this area there is a subduction of the Philippine plate under the Eurasian plate, which means that the former is sliding under the latter.
Japanese authorities have, however, issued a tsunami warning for several areas of the island of Kyushu (the largest in the south of the country).
