Lawyers from the US Department of Justice (DoJ) requested 36 months in prison for Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who was not even allowed to leave the USA as a result of the lawsuit filed. As it is known, the ministry claimed that Binance and Zhao did not adequately enforce federal sanctions and anti-money laundering laws and broke the laws.
“Zhao broke the law and gained great wealth”
This morning, DoJ lawyers demanded up to 36 months in prison for CZ. The following statements were used in the statement made by the Ministry:
“The message that will be given here will be given not only to CZ, but to the whole world. Zhao made huge profits by breaking US laws. The response for this should be a severe punishment. “Those who think they can make a fortune by breaking US laws should give up their ideas.”
It was 18 months, now it’s 36
As it is known, the maximum sentence Zhao could receive as a result of the agreement he made with the ministry was 18 months. However, ministry lawyers stated that the consequences and scale of Zhao’s “wrong actions” were so great that the punishment should also be large.
Ministry lawyers also reiterated the issue of a $50 million penalty, but CZ had already reached an agreement for this payment.
The case, which was expected to begin hearing in February, was postponed to April 30 in accordance with the agreement of the two parties.
